The Canadian Institute for Jewish Research
(CIJR) is a unique, independent, Montreal-based academic
think-tank, devoted to bringing objective, up-to-date data on and
analysis of Israel, the Middle East, and Jewish world-related issues
to the media, to our students and university campuses, and to the
Jewish and non-Jewish communities.
MISSION
The Institute’s ultimate aim is to strengthen public understanding
of Jewish Israel as a progressive, democratic society in its difficult
Middle Eastern context, and of Jewish world issues generally.
PUBLICATIONS
In the fall of 2000, CIJR inaugurated
its DAILY ISRANET BRIEFING e-mail service to counter anti-Israel
propaganda, and to keep the public and our readers informed of daily
issues affecting the Jewish people. Each daily Briefing—now
nearing the 2,000th issue and read by over 60,000 people worldwide—consists
of multiple outstanding, thought-provoking opinion pieces, articles,
or documents, on current issues. A weekly French-language Communiqué
Isranet bulletin is also available.
CIJR’s respected ISRAFAX
quarterly magazine is distributed across Canada and internationally.
The editors of ISRAFAX include key articles from major
international newspapers, magazines, scholarly journals, official
documents, and websites with varying perspectives on important issues.
The Israeli and Arab media are also scanned for timely reports,
opinion, and documents.
STUDENTS
CIJR also supports the acclaimed student-written Dateline:
Middle East magazine, distributed on campuses across Canada. The
Institute is implementing, for 2007-08, the new Student
Israel-Advocacy Seminars Program, a year-long training
initiative to counter the worsening on-campus anti-Israelism and
anti-Zionism. CIJR also offers several summer and academic-year
student internships.
MIDDLE EAST
& JEWISH WORLD DATABANK
The DataBank, unique in Canada, and accessible on CIJR’s website
, is a vast archive of Israel, Middle East, and Jewish world-related
materials. It holds thousands of items on all aspects of Israel’s
society, regional politics and issues, as well as Canadian- and
U.S.-related materials. Registered CIJR members can, free
of charge, search the DataBank’s holdings by keyword, author,
source, or by alphabetical subject-index.
SEMINARS AND
COLLOQUIA
The Institute’s regular Insider Briefing seminars and Community
Colloquia feature its own and other experts on Israel-, Middle East-
and Jewish-world issues. Recent speakers include noted journalist
and political analyst Yossi Klein Halevi; Palestinian Media Watch
Director, Itamar Marcus; Israel’s Ambassador to the United
Nations, Dan Gillerman; Commentary magazine founder and editor-at-large,
Norman Podhoretz; terrorism expert, Steven Emerson, former Israeli
IDF Chief of Staff, General Moshe Ya’alon, and former CIA
director James Woolsey.
